Light Cognitive was honored to contribute to the Finnish Pavilion at the prestigious London Design Biennale. Hosted at Somerset House in 2021, it was one of the first events to physically take place in London since the start of the covid pandemic. The event, under the artistic direction of award-winning artist and designer Es Devlin, centered on the theme Resonance, exploring how design connects and impacts human experiences.
Collaborating with Finnish empathy artist and designer Enni-Kukka Tuomala, alongside the Finnish Institute in the UK and Ireland and the Embassy of Finland in London, Light Cognitive provided bespoke light elements to support Tuomala’s installation, The Empathy Echo Chamber.
The evocative space was designed to inspire visitors to embrace empathy as a shared experience, fostering calm, spaciousness, and thoughtful reflection.
By recreating the gentle qualities of natural light, Light Cognitive’s installation subtly transformed the environment, enhancing its tranquil atmosphere. The natural light landscape, integrated into window elements, fostered a profound sense of well-being, aligning seamlessly with the Biennale’s mission, “Can we design a better world?” For Light Cognitive, this was an exploration of how our surroundings shape emotions, relationships, and understanding.
Light is more than something we see—it profoundly influences the brain’s emotional and cognitive responses. Light Cognitive isn’t just about illumination; it’s about creating light you feel.
A visitor's reflection:
"From my take on the Empathy Echo Chamber, environment plays an important role in optimizing empathy – take the example of light. I met the founders of Light Cognitive, whose solution recreates the dynamics of natural light and supported Tuomala’s installation. We discussed the importance of light for human beings, which got me thinking—if light positively impacts our mood, then we are very likely to be in a mindset to be more empathetic. Light is one factor in environments—how can we enhance our workspaces to optimize empathy and create better conversations, relationships, and ultimately productivity?"
